The finity of time, energy and attention

I’d like to keep this post simple and uncomplicated in bullet points.

I believe that we have finite time, attention and energy in our lives and it is upto us to make sure how we optimise the usage of these in order to design the lives we want.

At the starting of one’s career, even  if one has a lot of potential, we are deemed to be – “unproven” , so to speak. So you need to make your bones first , as the wisdom goes. For an entrepreneur, that means your first success. Without this, you can forget your planned progression to a serial entrepreneur. Serial “successful” Entrepreneur. (As much as I  agree failure is a better teacher, nothing succeeds like success and there is only so much you can learn from repeated failures unless you become sick of failing anymore )

So its ultra-essential that if you intend to change the world for the better, then you better, work your ass off on your first venture and become a 100hr workweek-obsessive-messianic leader if need be. So work is the first and foremost priority you need to take on. This will take care of your basic financial health.

If you are like me, then I don’t take any commitment weakly and so I keep commitments to a very small minimum and give it all I got. I enter a department making up my mind to become the absolute best in what I intend to do, say top 5% in the world. Its Hard. But its fun because I take up things that, I like to think, make me better and better. One aspect/ passion of my life compounding into another and creates a unique powerful arsenal to take on challenges and thus improve my odds of changing this world.

So as I have figured out, in this phase of my life, I have room for only three things that I am working on for the next 5 years where I intend to become the absolute best at, i.e. top 5% in the world –

1.My first and only venture ( SolarTown )

2. Fitness

3. Social skills

I will blog about the first two here extensively. Maybe I can learn from the incoming inbound readers about how I can improve more on these two. Maybe I will help another person to take up his long and arduous journey , just like I used to find inspiration from Mark Cuban‘s posts, although I am no Mark Cuban. Just doing my best to be my best for now. But most importantly, I do this for myself , since writing gives me an enormous clarity of thought and feels almost therapeutic about my courses of actions.

So here goes.

The perfect life design

If you were a Davos Man and have to choose the perfect cities to alternate living between, from my experience, I would say spend your summers in Kiev and all your winter months in Santiago. Can’t beat that combination. Can tell you that from personal wisdom.

Someday I intend to get back to that lifestyle. Maybe running businesses from across these two cities. That would be a life well spent.

My philosophy on money and its nature.

Too many people resort to calling money and its pursuit evil. I would whole heartedly disagree. You see, money is just an enabler. Its neither good nor bad by itself. The more of it you have , the more tasks you are enabled  to do and change about this world.

But these ‘tasks’ come in lock steps. You need a certain critical mass of this enabler to do each task.

For example: The critical mass of money for a man needed to obtain great physical health with a cut and jacked body and stable sharp mental health may be significantly higher than the ‘critical mass’ required to make all of humanity singularly powered by Solar power.

In both these cases, critical mass invested in the tasks over time reflects in self perpetuating extension of resources in other forms. For example : getting cut and jacked means that you have more personal and physical appeal & stamina in whatever activity you take up and also are perceived to have more power in social situations because of your physical presence. Whereas, getting the entire world to buy your solar power means that it reflects more in your ‘stock market’, which further means you have more to add to your critical mass to do something far more difficult in the next lock step like creating sustainable islands or fund all of the world’s cancer research in a massive scale to cure the world of cancer or I don’t know – start a weapons’ company to create Iron Man and protect the world’s peace.

In all cases, money – like energy- just transforms into something more useful unless you are using it purely for stimulating your base senses. In that case, it pretty soon reaches its top limits and there isn’t much use for it after a while, then you become an addict( alcohol, drugs, smokes and indiscriminate sexual indulgence ) to your senses, in which case all the “critical mass enabled” at your disposal would be such a terrible waste and nothing is ever enough till you get your next dopamine shot.

If you consider what would be the first few critical lock step to use money for, it should always be :

1. Getting to the prime of your physical and mental health

2. Optimising your time by outsourcing the mindless tasks in your life ( cooking, cleaning, driving, etc. ) to free up your ‘life’ time

3. Using the freed up time to focus on 5 departments : Health and longevity , Your purpose, Your key relationships ( more on this later), your passions outside your purpose, Your spirit.

4. Last and final chunk of critical mass should be reserved for Disaster recovery ( probably after making your bones achieving in your first venture) and should only be touched for recovering for a major non recoverable setback in your life , like an accident or something ), This should reflect 10% of your net-worth at any point of your life

But through all this, one should remember that for any aspirer, No.1 is the most important and without that we may get to achieving anything else at all.

Towards a brave new world

I walk down my roads, close my eyes and I see a different world. Like Neo who sees code even with eyes wide open, I see the possibility of what could be. Pieces of puzzles keep falling into my mind. Together the unheard  symphony is breathtakingly beautiful and breathlessly awaited . I walk down my roads, close my eyes and I see the world as it could be after I change it.

Startup Interview – part 1

A very small quip about my interview philosophy.

If at all am recruiting a candidate  for any function, I choose the best function and industry expert I know to attend the interview and then ask him at the interview :”Is the candidate better than you? “. If yes and only if yes, I proceed to the next step.

This belief springs from a core principle that : Our cause offer an opportunity of immense value to change the world and I will go to any length to seek and filter out only those deserving to steward that opportunity in my journey alongside.

My mindset everyday

Always hopeful and optimistic.

Eternally discontent at the rate of advancement and progress.

I know changes are never permanent.

But Change is.

Despair and Euphoria in entrepreneurship

Would you believe that you could feel two extreme feelings in one day?

Some mornings you feel utterly broke and despair that not even your advisors return your calls. The same evening you may feel that you are on track to becoming a billionaire.

Only in entrepreneurship.

Devils advocacy in startups

You see, you need Devils advocates in your team. As an entrepreneur , one of your job requirements is to radiate optimism. To deal hope and part with zest and grit to live and fight another day.

But you need Devils advocates sometimes to bring you back and ground you in reality for all the things that might go wrong and your optimism is blinding you from seeing the obvious.

But, there is a limit to playing the Devil’s advocate. If they do it in front of the whole team, a team that may psychologically depend on the entrepreneur to push them forth, especially after a failure it ruins the morale of the team and pushes them deeper into the crevice of despair.

The entrepreneurial team, is one which is constantly on the brink of disaster and anxiety and needs to be nurtured with courage, hope and specifically a monomaniacal determination / want to succeed. They must need success as much as they need to breathe.

The devil’s advocate is not needed at idea generation, not needed to give post mortem after a crucial meeting and definitely not needed to say ” I told you so” because its very easy to say ” I told you so” but what’s difficult is the courage to execute an ‘improbable’ plan in the face of the high probability to succeed.

The part where you need the devils advocate is where the entrepreneur feels that everything is going exactly (or) better than how he planned it, which means either that she aimed too low or is clueless about what’s really going wrong. Thats when you really need the advocacy of devil to teach you a little something.

Some thoughts I figured out

1. If I cant change the rules of the game I am playing , then the game becomes boring to me very soon. So ideally I want to enter a game, figure out an advantage that will enable me to change the game itself in the long run. Then it engages me.

2. People who ‘seem’ to multitask and seem to have “multiple ongoing ventures” have all actually started out focussed full-time on a single thing for many many early years in their lives, became extremely successful at it and then branched out. This applies to any long term pursuit / arena – sports, politics, business

Indian startup Mafia

We all know the Paypal Mafia and their doings. They have given rise to probably every big company that’s in existence in the US tech space.

We are seeing the formation of a very similar peculiar trend in India. Some of the internet giants seem to have a common thread and pattern behind their ‘connections’.

As an entrepreneur in the early stages, you SHOULD spot this trend and try as much as possible to be part of it.
